Soft Drinks/ Sodas
Last week we saw research that pointed the finger at soft drinks as being something that could potentially increase your risk of pancreatic cancer. It was found that less then one soft drink a day increases your chance of pancreatic cancer by 30% (see article). And now we see from the New York Times published on the 12th of February 2010 (see article) that perhaps soft drinks are the new tobacco. After all they are full of either artificial sweetener or man made sugars, highly addictive substances, the full extent of their ingredients are never fully established (secret recipes), they have a preservative that is known to damage DNA ( our most important cellur structures), as well as flavourings that have 48 chemicals (not ingredients) in them. And that is just the start.... the new energy drinks have 3x the amount of caffeine than a regular cup of coffee and have known detrimental short term affects on the nervous system.
If you are really interested in your health then I believe it would be prudent to consume soft drinks/sodas/energy drinks on a very small basis or NOT AT ALL!. I’ve always said if you’re going to drink spirits, drink them straight on ice or in water. If you drink soft drinks during the day then I expect that you need to look at other things like water or fresh brewed green tea, anything that is going to give you health. And remember juice is no substitute unless you dilute it down 20/80 with water. Water being the 80%.
NB.. Sodas are the USA term for soft drinks. Soda water is probably one of the drinks that is ok to consume without any side effects.
