Taking Responsibility for Your Health - Stop the Blame
CANCER patients are in collective denial; attributing stress, genetics or other factors beyond their control, diseases more likely to be triggered by lifestyle choices such as obesity or smoking, the first Australian study into the question has found.
Smoking was mentioned less than half as often as stress among possible causes. The Cancer Council NSW surveyed nearly 3000 people in the state, all of whom had received a cancer diagnosis at some time within the previous 18 months.
It was possible people might be using the term stress as a catch-all for other factors more directly related to cancer, everyone has stress in their life, its how you cope with the stress after the fact that’s important, for instance if you have a divorce then you may not eat as well afterwards or you may start drinking or drink more then usual.
Smoking was mentioned by only 6 per cent of people, and poor diet by 5 per cent, while lack of exercise was nominated by fewer than 2 per cent of the respondents - in contrast with Australian Institute of Health and Welfare analysis which suggests lifestyle factors account for 33 per cent of cancer cases and many health professionals believing this to be a far bigger percentage.
Epidemiological research suggested smoking was responsible for at least 70 per cent of lung cancer and one in five of all cancers. Although its role was poorly acknowledged across the entire group of cancer patients, smoking was cited by 40 per cent of the 109 lung cancer patients who mentioned any possible cause for their disease.
Overall, lung cancer patients were more likely to express a belief that their cancer had at least one specific cause, with about three-quarters detailing possible factors versus about half of people with other forms of cancer.
Among the 59 per cent of breast cancer patients who attributed their disease to any cause, a quarter nominated stress while another quarter mentioned genetics, reproductive history, age, or other factors they could not change. Fewer than 20 per cent suggested diet, exercise, alcohol or other lifestyle choices might have influenced their cancer.
The score was similar for bowel cancer, and even more pronounced among men with prostate cancer, nearly half of whom blamed genetics, age or other things they could not change.
I find these facts all about laying blame rather then taking responsibility. Many people may disagree with me but I feel that we can take responsibility for our health rather then believing we are doomed due to age, genetics, stress etc.
In March this year on facebook I presented over a couple of weeks pictures of humans and animals that were maimed, sick, dead or infertile etc. When ever I put a picture of an animal up the answers were mostly that the environment was the cause, but when the picture of a sick or maimed human was presented the answers were mainly genetic not environmental.
We seem to have two different outlooks when it comes to the health of animals and humans, but we are all animals living on this planet and are affected by our environment.
There are chemicals in the environment that affect humans and animals they are insidious and have infiltrated every part of this planet. All you have to do is read Rachel Carson's 1962 book Silent Spring to understand that it hasn't gotten better it is getting worse. Not only has our environment got chemicals in it but so does our food, cosmetics, personal care products, homes, beds, carpets etc. It is hard to avoid them.
We can only do the best with what we have and the more we look after ourselves the healthier we should be.
Having said that my mother was a beautiful person who looked after herself, ate almost perfectly, was spiritually aware, she never smoked, exercised and at 69 had more energy then a teenager. She started to cough, her legs began to swell and after a three months died of lung cancer - she was not a smoker.
My Mum was the oldest of 11 children she had a father who was a strong disciplinarian, she lost 7 members of her family in 4 years to AIDS due to blood transfusion as a result of 6 of her brothers having haemophilia. Her younger brother his wife and their baby all passed in a 12 month period - an entire family wiped out. Before my Mum got cancer her mother died and my sister was diagnosed with cancer. I know my Mums story intimately and there is probably a lot that I don't know. My belief is that your life is all about your physical, chemical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. You cannot disregard any.
Who knows if my Mum and sister did not look after themselves so well they may have not have lasted to 69 and 46 respectively. They may have died an even earlier death then what they did.
I do believe that we have the ability to have total control over our health and if we think that we don't then we are doomed from the minute we are born. If I don't have control what is the point in doing all that I do. What is the point in me making sure that everything I have done for my children is of the highest good. No vitamin K, no vaccinations, no medications, healthy foods, positive environment, love, respect, active lifestyle. I want to give my children every possible chance to be healthy and have the best chance for a great life, just as my parents did for me. Back in the 80's I was seen as a fruit loop as were my parents in the late 50's. In fact I'm still seen as a bit of a heretic.
We can take this even further and live by a statement of whether you live below the line or above the line. Below the line we lay blame, take no responsibility and do nothing for our health (people do live like this) or we can live above the line and take ownership and responsibility for all that we do and happens to us. This is the way I choose to live.
I had five family member die in 12 months - Grandmother, mother, sister, friend and mother in law. I don't see this as something that just happened to me but rather something that has made a significant change in my life. Spiritually I have never been more content and I have total peace in the loss of these 5 beautiful women in my life. I no longer doubt what death is all about I have an absolute knowledge that I will see them again. I also have certainty that the path I lay for people to learn about their physical health will lead them to a path that will eventually give their souls a chance to grow and progress and to find happiness and peace on this planet.
I believe we create our own heaven or hell on this planet. It is our responsibility to find heaven here before we seek it somewhere else. I know of one amazing woman that has many physical challenges, I work with her every day and despite all that has happened to her, she has found heaven on earth. She takes full responsibility for her life and lives it to the fullest. I never hear her blame anybody for anything. She is an inspiration that shows by living above the line anything is possible.
