My fondest childhood memories are of sitting around the dinner table with family and friends and consuming not only the beautiful food my mother prepared but the day's events, strories and laughter. For many families mealtimes were once the only gathering of the family, but this time-honoured tradition is sadly diminishing: the television remains on, the phone rings and everyone eats at different times suited to their own individual pursuits.

I remember my Mum never wasted anything when she was cooking, even the bones. The kitchen was always brewing something. Mum made all her own meat broths and then she would freeze them in old milk (carton - not plastic) containers. She would name them and date them and use them throughout her cooking and for drinking.
