The addition of folic acid to British bread should be compulsory, the nation's Food Standards Agency says.
The agency has told the UK government the move could prevent dozens of babies developing spina bifida.
Australia introduced mandatory addition of folic acid to bread products here on September 13. Similar fortification rules have been in place in the USA and Canada for nearly 10 years.
Some research suggests an increase in cases of bowel cancer. However Britain's Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition said this evidence was insubstantial and that any increase in cases could be down to improved screening.
It did, however, recommend that those deemed to be at greater risk of colon cancer should receive precautionary advice on taking extra supplements containing folic acid, and that the situation should be monitored.
