One of the most important things about health is to ensure you are always happy, having fun and spending time with loved ones. So how do you enjoy yourself on New Year’s Eve without letting all your incredible healthy habits go by the wayside?

I can assure you that I will be dancing most of the night, chatting to friends about our dreams and goals for the year ahead, as well reminiscing about what we loved and the lessons learnt about this year.

Here are my top ten tips to ensure you have an awesome night out, without affecting your health.

1. Take a platter of food to the event that you can eat and others can enjoy too

This might include bliss balls, homemade dips such lime and dill cultured cashew dip, lemon tahini roasted beetroot dip, roasted spicy capsicum dip or mango avocado salsa with some vegetable sticks, meat skewers, patties – spring onion and salmon , turmeric veggie patties,  meatballs or even some chicken, sage & zucchini fritters. 2. If you choose to drink, choose the purest alcohol.

My top picks are tequila, vodka and gin served with sparkling water and fresh lemon or lime. However, organic and preservative free wines and gluten free beers can be enjoyed, though obviously in small amounts.

Some people can’t tolerate wine at all, so if this is you, stay clear of it, and drink something else that you do like. Symptoms may include headaches, sinus, muscle and joint pain, digestive issues, hot flushes, rashes and more.

3. The obvious; drink plenty of water!

The only way inflammation and toxins will leave your body is if you are hydrated. This is absolutely crucial, so take filtered water with you or ensure you have it available at the event. Add a squeeze of lemon, lime or apple cider vinegar to alkalise your body, provide electrolytes and remove toxins.

4. Have an Epsom salt bath the day before and the day after

Epsom salt baths provide you with magnesium and sulphur which are both essential for detoxification. Alternatively you could swim in the sea. Saltwater has many natural healing properties. Both an Epsom salt bath and a dip in the sea will enhance your energy, reduce stress and assist in reducing any inflammation.  It will also allow you to relax and recover if you’ve had less sleep.


5. Have activated charcoal if you drink alcohol or have food that creates discomfort

This will not reverse the damage, though it will lessen the toxin exposure and allow you to eliminate it more swiftly. You can find a high quality activated charcoal here. However, do your absolute best to not have any inflammatory foods or alcohol.

6. Consider an infrared sauna a day or two later

Infrared saunas are incredibly detoxifying, and therefore will take some pressure off your body, allowing you to recover more quickly.

7. Have a shot of greens!

This is a quick way to ensure you are getting an abundance of nutrient dense, detoxifying greens to boost your energy, clarity and assist in inflammation reduction. Discover why having greens is SO important here.


8. Sleep and rest

Allow yourself to sleep in after a late night. I find this VERY difficult, as my body clock is set to an early rise, so I usually still get up at the same time, then go to bed early the next day, and wake at my usual time again. However, if you’re able to sleep in then do. Some tricks to assist in allowing you to sleep in are – earplugs, having blackout curtains in the bedroom and putting your phone on flight mode.

9. Be strong and stay true to your values while being out

When it comes to your food and drink choices, remain strong adhering to your own values rather than others. You know what makes you feel good, so stay strong. Read more tips on how you can do this here.

10. Focus on nutrient dense and healing foods

On the day before and on the day after your night out, focus on the most nutrient dense foods. This includes liver, nature’s most potent superfood, fermented foods, bone broths, quality and traditional fats like ghee and coconut oil and organic fresh herbs and leafy greens.

Just because you are putting something different into your mouth than the rest of the crowd, it doesn’t mean you need to miss out altogether.
