Cyndi O’Meara is a nutritionist, film maker – ‘What’s With Wheat?’, best-selling author, international speaker and founder of Changing Habits.
Cyndi graduated with a BSc majoring in Nutrition from Deakin University in 1984, her special interest was ancestral foods. At the end of her degree she was so disillusioned by the nutritional guidelines that she paved her own path and stayed clear of the low fat diets of the day, and not without controversy.
Her ground breaking book Changing Habits Changing Lives (1998) became an instant best seller and from there she has grown a successful organic food company, certified online education program and ground breaking documentary.
Cyndi is about educating, her greatest love is to teach people, in order for them to make better choices in their life, so they too can enjoy greater health throughout their life. Her unique, surprisingly simple and down-to-earth approach challenges and encourage others to eliminate unhealthy habits and has inspired thousands to make smarter choices about the food they choose to put into their body.

Aromatherapy is an ancient healing modality that has been around for thousands of years, however it is only in the last century that it has become more scientifically validated. Aromatherapy, put simply, is a therapy using aromas. These aromas are called essential oils, which are extracted from herbs, grass, bark, flowers, resin, peel, roots or various other plant sources. Steam distillation is the most common method of extraction, which leaves two distinct liquids – floral water and the essential oil. Some companies will bottle and sell the floral waters as well as the essential oil. An essential oil is highly concentrated sometimes 70 times more than the plant is has come from. So the key point to remember with aromatherapy is less is best. Only a few drops are needed to make a difference.
Before you begin using essential oils it is important to understand that even though aromatherapy is a natural therapy it does not necessarily mean it is safe. It is imperative you read and understand all contra-indications as there are some oils to be used with caution like on sensitive skin, people prone to epilepsy or high blood pressure. Some oils should also be avoided during pregnancy or in direct sunlight. If you are unsure check with a qualified aromatherapist and have a good book as your reference or guide.
There are many fantastic ways to use essential oils including massage, vaporisation, bathing, compressing, inhalation, footbaths, spritzer and, in a few instances, directly
Here are 10 of our favourite essential oils and some of their properties.
Lavender is calming, nurturing, relaxing and comforting. It is the ‘mother hug’ of all the essential oils! A fantastic oil for first aid, burns, bites, stings and wounds. Lavender is also an excellent skin care oil. Add a drop to your moisturiser and enhance the cell regenerating qualities. Lavender is a great oil for children to help calm and relax. One drop on a tissue or on the pillow can help enhance a better sleep.
Orange is enlightening, uplifting, radiating and celebrating. One of those ‘happy’ oils that makes everyone feel good. Orange is excellent to use in a vaporiser when entertaining or with lavender to help sleep. Orange is also excellent if feeling a lack of energy, anxious or stressed. Children usually love the smell of orange.
Geranium is balancing, stabilising, comforting and regulating. It is excellent to help balance mood swings, relieve PMT and hormonal imbalances and helps revive congested and sluggish skin. If you feel life is like one big roller coaster with heaps of emotional extremes then this is the oil for you.
Frankincense is calming, regenerating, fortifying and comforting. One of the best oils to use in skin care as it is so regenerating for skin cells. One of the three gifts to Jesus Christ, Frankincense is renowned for its spiritual qualities. Excellent to inhale during meditation or prayer. Also a wonderful oil to use in a massage blend for respiratory conditions.
Clary Sage is regulating, euphoric, uplifting and harmonising. It leaves you feeling uplifted and happy as it is an excellent mood enhancer. Whilst Clary Sage should be avoided topically during pregnancy it is fantastic during labour to help ease contractions. A good oil for PMT, menopause, depression, fear and anxiety. Clary Sage is a good anti dandruff oil particularly as a hair rinse after cleaning.
Eucalyptus is cleansing, refreshing, energising and easing. An excellent oil for clearing coughs, colds and flu, especially with a hot water inhalation using a towel over the head for at least 5 minutes. Eucalyptus is also a great aid to help relieve muscle aches and pains and is an excellent immunity booster. Applying eucalyptus directly is a safe and effective way to remove stains in clothing.
Lime is refreshing, revitalising, activating and enlightening. It is a great ‘beam me up’ oil. It is excellent to help relieve mental fatigue, congested oily skin, lack of energy and anxiety or depression.
Tea Tree is energising, cleansing, purifying and healing. One of the most common oils used as an antiseptic for wounds, coughs, colds, rashes and acne. It is also helps treat fungal infections very effectively. Used in a spritzer bottle it makes an excellent air freshener and surface cleanser. It is a great oil to keep the body, skin and home clean!
Ylang Ylang is sensual, calming, tranquillising and relaxing. Known for its aphrodisiac qualities and ability to help enhance moods, Ylang Ylang is a wonderful oil for a romantic interlude! It is good for combination skin, PMT and irritability. Remember to use in moderation as too much may cause headaches.
Peppermint is refreshing, warming, cooling and activating. It is known as the digestive remedy as it can help relive indigestion, upset tummies and travel sickness. It is excellent for cold or tired feet and a great decongestant. Peppermint is fantastic as a skin tonic and helps relieve tired achey muscles.
When it comes to purchasing good quality essential oils and aromatherapy products we recommend a reputable supplier. To know an essential oil brand is of high quality check the price first. Essential oils vary in price from Lavender at around $15 for a 9ml bottle to pure Rose oil at around $450 AUD. The reason prices vary is because of the way they are extracted, where they are grown, their yield and the harvesting. Check the bottle has the words ‘pure essential oil’ on the front and ensure the botanical name is on the bottle so you can see the exact source.

Thermomix – Makes eating healthy, easier
I’ve always advocated eating foods made with the best of ingredients. Most foods can be healthy, like chocolate cake, mayonnaise and café late if the ingredients are healthy. Modern day diets are so obsessed with the amount of food you should be eating that they have failed to address the quality of the food. What I mean by this is instead of eating diet foods containing hydrogenated vegetable food, eat foods made with cold pressed oils or eating foods made from white sugar or artificial sweeteners. Eat foods made with rapadura sugar or honey (natural sugars not refined). I harp on and on about this, but it is very important.
If you’re not prepared to make foods from scratch then finding foods made with the best of ingredients is the hardest part. When you finally find a food made with all the healthy ingredients, I advocate it can be slightly more expensive than normal or you can’t find it again. Many country markets have these wonderful homemade goodies but you only visit them infrequently. This is a dilemma faced by many healthy seeking food lovers.
Well, I’ve found a solution to this dilemma. In 2006 I had a lady contact me to tell me that she liked my books; Changing Habits Changing Lives and the cook book. She told me she had purchased a cooking machine that made my type of cooking a breeze. The machine did the work of 10 appliances I had in my cupboard and I was adamant I wasn’t buying anymore kitchen appliances. This wonderful lady came to the Sunshine Coast and demonstrated this wonderful machine and after 10 minutes of a 2 hour demonstration I knew it was the solution to making healthy cooking easy.
The machine is called a Thermomix. It cooks, stirs, grinds, grates, kneads, mixes, steams and the list is endless. If I want to make eggs benedict, it makes the hollandaise sauce in six minutes. All I have to do is add the butter, egg yolks, lemon juice, vinegar and sea salt, press three buttons (timer, heat setting and stir speed) and like magic in 6 minutes I have hollandaise sauce. It makes old fashion custard in 7 minutes and because the temperature is exact and it stirs itself, you can walk away and the result is perfect custard. Mashed potatoes have never tasted so good; all you do is add potatoes, butter and milk, press three buttons and 20 minutes later perfect mashed potato. I can knead bread in 3 minutes, make porridge from whole grains in 7 minutes, grind gains, grate 250gms of cheese in 4 seconds, make lasagna in two easy steps, prepare perfect lemon butter in 6 minutes, and create homemade lemonade in minutes.
One night my husband and I wanted to go out and the children wanted pasta. I made up the sauce in the Thermomix, added the fettuccini to the machine, it cooked in 7 minutes and I had perfect pasta with sauce in one bowl.
I’ve made homemade nutella, pizza bases, bread, cakes, bolognaise sauce, juice, jams, spreads, perfect rice, curry and the list is endless. In a couple of hours I can make all the condiments needed for the month. My biggest wish is that I’d had the Thermomix when I had small children. It would have been perfect for making easy, quick first meals for young babies beginning to eat.
If you are serious about eating healthy, then I recommend you look at this amazing machine. And if you’re worried about cleaning, it’s not a problem. It cleans itself. It has never burnt our food either as the temperature is regulated. There is only a lid and bowl to clean, rather then a dozen attachments.
I’ve had a Thermomix since 2006 and what it can do never ceases to amaze me. Every time a friend comes round and watches me cook, they end up ordering one. I’ve gotten rid of 90% of my kitchen appliances as it can do what most of them do.
I have to tell you that it is not cheap as you can imagine, but by selling all my old appliances I came up with half the cost of the machine, plus the amount I save in petrol not going to markets 50km away to buy produce or buying expensive organic natural condiments. I have worked out that it pays for itself, as well as the time it saves. I can put breakfast on in the morning, for example porridge and because it is timed, temperature regulated and stirs, I can walk away and have a shower and it’s ready when I get back. The same at dinner – I just walk away from it and do other things instead of being tied to the stove stirring and watching I don’t burn things.
You may think that this is a selling pitch…..what it really is, is me sharing with you the most amazing tool to make healthy eating a breeze. I only recommend products that I believe in and THIS MACHINE IS GREAT, FANTASTIC, INCREDIBLE!

I am often asked which is the best water filter to buy to get rid of the Fluoride in your water?
