BRUCE PASCOE – WRITER, EDITOR AND ANTHOLOGIST
SUBJECT: Indigenous Foods – Writer of the book Dark Emu, Bruce will discuss the foods that the Australian Indigenous people have eaten for thousands of years and the relationship that they have with the land.
Bruce was born in Victoria (south-eastern Australia) in 1947 and graduated from Melbourne University with a Bachelor of Education. He has a Bunurong and Tasmanian heritage. He has worked as a teacher, farmer, fisherman, barman, farm fence contractor, lecturer, Aboriginal language researcher, archeological site worker and book editor. He has written 27 books including a loosely linked series of 5 novels and won the Fellowship of Australian Writers´ Literature Award in 1999. His novel Fog won the Prime Minister’s award in 2013. His stories have won 10 national competitions and been published in 6 languages and 9 countries.
Over the last few years, much of Bruce’s work has involved research into indigenous history, indigenous language revival and being Secretary of the local Aboriginal Corporation. In his book Dark Emu Black Seeds, which was short listed for the 2014 Victorian Premier’s Indigenous Writer’s Award, Qld Premier’s Award and WON the NSW Premier’s Book of the year and Indigenous Writer’s Prize in 2016, Pascoe puts forward a compelling argument for a reconsideration of the hunter-gatherer label for pre-colonial Aboriginal Australians. The evidence insists that Aboriginal people right across the continent were using domesticated plants, sowing. harvesting, irrigating and storing- behaviours inconsistent with the hunter-gather tag. ‘If we look at the evidence presented to us by the explorers and explain to our children that Aboriginal people did build houses, did build dams, did sow, irrigate and till the land, did alter the course of rivers, did sew their clothes, and did construct a system of pan-continental government that generated peace and prosperity, then it is likely we will admire and love our land all the more.’
