Our story… why we source and supply Chia Seeds

Due to their Omega 3 ALA properties and how versatility they are to use, Cyndi began looking for a local source of chia seeds, but we wanted organically grown. Realising that this was not currently available we sourced our chia from its native home – South America.

History of Chia Seeds

Chia (Salvia Hispanica) comes from the Mayan word meaning strength and these tiny seeds are nutrition packed. Legend has it that the Aztecs and Mayans used chia seeds to fuel performance and seen as a survival food as well as a food for generations to thrive. It’s not hard to see why. When we look at the nutritional profile, 19.5g/100g protein, 23g/100g fibre, 17.5g/100g Omega 3 ALA essential fatty acids.

Our Chia Seeds story

At Changing Habits we pride ourselves with FOSET (Foods; organic, sustainable, ethical and trusted). Sometimes it takes us years to find the right food that fit the criteria.

Many years ago we began looking for a local source of chia, but wanting to purchase an organically grown product that didn’t use chemical so we realised that we would have a source them from their native home, South America.

Due to the high fibre content of chia seeds, they absorb up to 10 times their own weight in water so they can be used in cooking to replace eggs which is beneficial for vegans and those with egg intolerances.

The carbohydrates in chia seeds are predominantly fibre. This adds bulk to the diet and can help regulate bowel movements and manage constipation.

Chia seeds are very versatile. They can be added to smoothies, mixed with nuts and seeds to make a muesli, added to coconut water or milk to make a chia porridge, sprinkled on salad or used in baking.

The serving suggestion for chia seeds is 15g (3 teaspoons).

100% organic chia seeds

‘Chia’ is the ancient Mayan word for ‘Strength’ as chia seeds are often praised for their ability to provide sustained energy and promote fullness.
It is incredibly easy to incorporate chia seeds into your diet due to their mild taste. They can be sprinkled over porridge, fruit or yoghurt; added to cooked or raw muesli’s; used in baked goods, bliss balls and raw desserts; made into puddings; or added to smoothies, juices, dips, jelly or jams.
Chia seeds can also be used as an egg replacement when soaked in water when cooking baked goods.

Our chia seeds are 23% fibre in weight. Chia seeds can absorb 10 times their weight in water because of all the fibre and become gel-like. They expand in your stomach to increase fullness and slow down the absorption of food.

Omega 3 ALA: Chia seeds are composed of 17.5% Omega 3s ALA, making them one of the richest plant-based sources of these fatty acids.
Chia seeds are a very stable source of Omega 3 ALA and they can be stored for extended periods of time without becoming rancid.

I love buying my products form Cyndi because it’s peace of mind that if she has it in her pantry than I know it’s fine to have in mine. It’s peace of mind that I don’t need to research it, Cyndi’s done all the hard work. I make a an amazing choc banana Chia pudding and I grind these seeds and add them to my LSA and sprinkle and add at any opportunity!

Even though this is now available elsewhere, I so admired the work that Changing Habits originally put into sourcing this organic chia from its mother place of production, Mexico.

I use it in smoothies, chia pudding, bread, bliss balls, and it is such an easy item to take and use when travelling. For this I put chia, cacao, and goji berries together, and then mix a small quantity with desired liquid as needed.
