Go Bamboo, founded by Mick Williams and Anna Proctor, is a New Zealand company that’s serious about keeping plastic out of our coastlines, oceans and landfill.
The North Pacific gyre – a sea of plastic twice the size of the state of Texas – was first brought to Mick and Anna’s attention by friends over dinner one night. They were so shocked and disgusted that they decided to try and live their lives with as little plastic as possible.
They started to pay more attention to what they were buying in their weekly shop, making better choices about packaging and choosing non-plastic alternatives when available. This was going fine until they needed to replace the kids’ toothbrushes. They were struck by the amount of plastic that goes into a toothbrush, plus the unnecessary packaging, and that there was no non-plastic alternative. If every person buys three or four of these a year, that adds up to a lot over a lifetime. Mick and Anna didn’t buy toothbrushes that day and started to research non-plastic options, but there were none in New Zealand.
So they created Go Bamboo with natural toothbrushes using bamboo as an environmentally friendly raw material. They were pretty popular and Mick and Anna soon realised that bamboo could be used instead of plastic in more disposable items.
They expanded their range to include other household items like pegs, veggie brushes and cotton buds, and are constantly on the lookout for opportunities to provide simple and sustainable alternatives to the little things we all use every day.
Go Bamboo also won the waste minimisation category of the 2012 Green Ribbon Awards, which honour outstanding contribution to protecting New Zealand’s environment.
