A couple of weeks ago I was flying home with Jetstar from Melbourne after a speaking tour of Victoria.  I had a bit of a rush to the plane, as I was coming from the country and catching an early flight.

Normally I try and buy food before I step onto a plane but on this particular day I did not get a chance.  It was a two hour flight home and I was feeling a little hungry so I looked through the menu and saw a Pesto Chicken and Sundried Tomato Gourmet Wrap.

I thought to myself; they can not do too much to that, so I purchased it.  As I was about to eat it I noticed the wrapping had the ingredients listed, so before I tasted a morsel of the wrap I read the ingredients. Take a look and see what you think?

Made in Australia from local & imported ingredients

The chicken was a concoction of no less than eleven chemicals and if you count the ingredients in the flavour it could be up to sixty.  The bread had the preservative 282 which is a questionable ingredient which may cause behavioural and learning problems, skin irritation, headaches, migraines and asthma.  The mayonnaise was made with a number of ingredients and chemicals but no egg, just some yolk powder and included, yet another suspect additive 202, which has similar side effects to that of the preservative 282.   And then to top it off, there were sulfites in the wrap, which may cause gastric irritation, nausea and swelling and should be avoided by asthmatics.

When I think of gourmet I think of real and I would definitely expect butter not some cheap imitation like margarine to be smeared over the bread.

I know that Jetstar would not be the only culprit, I would say that most airlines would serve this type of food as well as shops on the ground.  It is so important to be diligent now more then ever.  At times this may be the only food available and on the occasion it is OK, but if we are unaware that this is happening in the food industry then it is possible that these fake food like substances, are being consumed on a daily basis and the body just can not cope with this onslaught of chemicals.
