Our story… why we source and supply Camu Camu

Wanting to provide a non-chemical based vitamin C for her family, Cyndi found that  Camu Camu is one of the richest sources of nature-based vitamin C available and based on scientific research, is more powerful than isolated, processed ascorbic acid. Our organic Camu Camu is sourced from South America where the berry is harvested by the indigenous people using traditional methods as part of a fair trade project. This has enabled the Amazonian people to sustain their culture and save their traditional lands.

Back in the 1980’s when I was a young nutrition consultant, the super nutrient of the time was vitamin C.  It seemed everyone was taking it to improve their immune system or to ward off colds and flu’s.  People would even mega dose to the point of diarrhea. This was all the rage for many ailments, including arthritis and heart disease, although it was not something that I advocated.  Having said that, I would read about how it was done and how to do it, and respected the experts of the time.

Just 30 years on and I don’t hear the same advice and information about Vitamin C.  It now forms a part of the supplements people take, increasing vitamin C intake when colds and flu’s are near.

Vitamin C, as it was called then, was in fact ascorbic acid and came in all forms: powder, capsules and tablets.  Many companies said that they were pure but with my current knowledge of how capsules and tablets are produced, I now know this to be far from the truth.

Back then, I purchased ascorbic acid in powder form for my clients, from a reputable vitamin company. Their ascorbic acid was touted as being the best as they added hesperidin and bioflavonoids to the mix so that the ascorbic acid could be absorbed and used by the body more efficiently.  It was revolutionary.  It had been discovered by research that in order for the body to use ascorbic acid, other components needed to be added to the mix.  At that time, it was common knowledge that ascorbic acid is just one small part of the vitamin C complex the body requires for health.

Ascorbic acid is not Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a matrix of many natural compounds including co-enzymes, bioflavonoids and co factors which help the body not only absorb vitamin C, but utilise it efficiently.  All foods that contain vitamin C also have a mix of the three macro nutrients; fats, carbohydrates and amino acids.  It is never found in nature isolated as ascorbic acid.

Laboratory made isolated ascorbic acid can never have the intelligence of nature based vitamin C.  Even the scientist who isolated ascorbic acid knew this. He realised that foods were more powerful than any isolate and hunted the world looking for foods high in vitamin C. His search finally found the berry – Camu Camu.

There are many foods high in vitamin C including kakadu plum, camu camu, rosehip, acerola and baobab.  Citrus fruits are the poor cousins to these amazing foods.  While Camu Camu has approximately 23,000 mg per 100 gm of fruit, oranges have 50mg per 100gm of fruit.

Camu Camu has vast difference in Vitamin C levels!

So what that translates to is our Camu Camu is 460 times higher than an average orange, or our Camu Camu contains 23% natural vitamin C as opposed to .05% Vitamin C found in an average orange. Camu Camu is one of the richest sources of natural vitamin C in the world and has grown abundantly along the Amazon River for centuries.  The berry is harvested by the indigenous people using traditional methods as part of a fair trade project. This has enabled the Amazonian people to sustain their culture and to save their traditional lands.  The locals have always known the benefits of Camu Camu and have used it for generations as a food and medicinally.

Changing Habits worked with locals in order to secure some Camu Camu for our clients.  Howard, Changing Habits Managing Director and husband of Cyndi travelled to South America and spent many long hours on buses and other modes of transport, talking with the people who helped this happen.

Camu Camu, because of its nature, is an expensive food to transport to other areas of the world.  It was suggested that we package the dried Camu Camu powder in capsules.  I asked for the spec sheet of the capsules and was disturbed to find that one of the ingredients was propylene glycol.  This is an additive that has been banned in the US from medications, due to research showing that it causes liver and kidney damage.  In other words, a perfect organic food was being put into a capsule that compromised health.  It really didn’t make any sense to me and we would have no part in this type of packaging.

It has taken some time to source the correct Camu Camu. At one point we had a particular supplier who was offering a reasonable price for the product, so much cheaper than others. With further investigation, we found that this supplier was adding ascorbic acid to the Camu Camu – of course we were not going to purchase from this supplier. Sourcing products over the past few years has opened my eyes to so many unethical practices, mostly in the name of product.

One thing I am determined about is to bring quality products to our customers.

Camu Camu is a food with a tangy citrus taste, so it can be added to smoothies, coconut water, sprinkled on fruit or CADA, added to raw protein bars or just stirred into a glass of filtered water.

We recommend 1/2 tsp per day. You may increase to 1 level tsp per day in times of stress, as well as to prevent colds and flu’s or when you are suffering from a compromised immune system.

It is advised NOT to heat this nutrient rich food.

100% Camu Camu powder

When you are looking for a natural vitamin C, it is important that the ingredients are a food rich in vitamin C rather than calcium ascorbate, sodium ascorbate or vitamin C which are all produced in a laboratory.

Following are three labels for your perusal.  The first label gives you the source of the vitamin C being Changing Habits Camu Camu, with the nutritional label giving you the quantity of the Vitamin C within the food.  This is a whole food in powder form with the full spectrum of nutrients required to use the vitamin C effectively.

The second and third labels lists the ingredients, of which none are real foods – they are all isolates mixed together and made in a chemical laboratory.  Your evolutionary body has never eaten vitamin C like this and will not use it the way nature intended.

A Snap Shot of Camu Camu

Camu Camu is a shrub grown in the swampy and flooded areas of the Amazon rain forests of Peru, Brazil, Venezuela and Columbia.  The fruit and the leaves have been used as medicine by the indigenous people of the Amazon for generations.  The fruit has a tangy cirtrus taste.

The nutritional value of Camu Camu is touted for its high vitamin C but it also has many other nutrients that will help with strengthening the numerous systems in the body.  The nutritional profile includes; bioflavonoids, the amino acids, serine, valine and leucine plus the three B vitamins, thiamine, riboflavin and niacin, all in their natural form as nature intended bound with other micro and macro nutrients.

There is not enough research on this Camu Camu plant to know how it does effect the body, but it seems to have an effect on many medical conditions.

Some of the research includes a 2008 study from the Journal of Cardiology, it was a small study on 20 male smokers who either took Camu Camu juice or ascorbic acid every day for a week.  At the end of the week, the group that took Camu Camu showed a decrease in inflammatory markers and oxidative stress while the group that took ascorbic acid had no decrease in markers.  Then in 2010, a study appeared in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry showing how Camu Camu contained high amounts of antioxidants and elagic acid which may have some clinical application with diabetes.

Having said all that, this is a food, a whole food, a food that has been used for 1000’s of years as part of a diet where modern western diseases did not exist or if they did in very minor ways.  People are individuals we all react to foods in varying ways with bio-individuality.  No one can predict the exact effect this food will have on you but know that your evolutionary body needs quality foods and the Camu Camu is a quality food with high concentrations of a vitamin that has shown to be a very big factor in our general health and immunity.

Taking Camu Camu as part of the eating principles of Changing Habits can help with the following conditions.  Eating a junk food diet and supplementing with Camu Camu is still a junk food diet and I, nor anyone else, can guarantee a spontaneous healing from the following conditions.  What I can say is that Camu Camu has been used to help the following:

  • viral infections; cold sores and shingles
  • common cold and flu
  • eye conditions; cataracts and glaucoma
  • gum disease; gingivitis, sore and bleeding gums as well as ulcers
  • chronic fatigue
  • headaches
  • depression
  • inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, arteriosclerosis and much more.

It can also be used to increase energy, maintain healthy gums, eyes, skin and general health overall.

I love to add CamuCamu powder to my smoothies and bliss balls! I love that it is high in vitamin C but does not contain the fake stuff that is in a lot of Vitamin C supplements! It’s pure and natural and keeps me healthy during the cold and flu season.

I use Camu Camu in my smoothie. Recently I had a sore throat and had run out of this product. After receiving some more Camu Camu it only took 1 dose in my smoothie and my sore throat was gone. I had considered buying another product from elsewhere however it had many additives included so I chose Changing Habits as it’s %100 Camu

Our company uses Camu Camu , we have been experimenting with it making Camu orange lemon jellies . And next we are going to make Mango jellies . Totally love this way of taking the daily dose of Vit C. You don’t have to use cow gelatin either there is a vege gelatin called Jel-it -in works really well. Thank you Changing Habits for bringing great quality products to our tables and tummies.

I love this product so much. I feel so much better taking this than a Vitamin C tablet. I have been using it this time around for only a few days and already am sleeping better and feel less stressed.
