Nutrition has always been my love. Not only do I love to eat good food, but I also love learning about food and nutrition.

I didn’t agree with what I was taught at university when it came to nutrition and I have always gone against the grain dismissing margarine, low fat foods, artificial sweeteners, processed foods, calorie counting and the dietary guidelines.

When I first wrote my book Changing Habits Changing Lives back in the early 90’s, no publisher in Australia was interested. When I wrote for the local paper at the same time, the letters to the editor were polarising; either people agreed or vehemently disagreed, calling me a charlatan.

I also remember speaking at an event for a group called Happy Slimmers, based in Caloundra. It was almost a turning point in my career. My message was so badly received that people were storming out or verbally abusing me.

I shelved my book, my speaking and my writing for the paper and decided to focus 100% of my energy on my family, making sure I fed them the best foods made from scratch by me. I also took up sewing, making all my children’s clothes and many of my own.

Then, in 1995, a friend of mine asked if I’d like to go to a day seminar in Brisbane with a man called Tony Robbins. I’d never heard of him before but thought I’d go.

It was such an amazing day that I called my husband and said, “Let’s go to (Tony Robbin’s event) Unleash the Power Within (UPW) in Sydney.” He agreed and the following weekend we found ourselves with thousands of other people fire walking and learning about being unlimited.

On the Monday of the event, Tony didn’t speak but rather left the stage to a nutritionist who spoke about health and food. I was so excited as they were speaking my language with regards to food and nutrition. I made the decision on that day to resurrect my book, rewrite it in a simpler form and self publish it.

I had three young children at the time so the only time I had to work on my book was 4.30am in the morning before they woke up, or when all three were asleep during the day (which was rare).

By 1998 my book was published and on the bestseller list. From that one book, my husband and I have been able to create a business encompassing an organic food market, programs, books, cookbooks, a documentary and registered training organisation to teach and educate professionals and health coaches. We also run an organic farm and have adventures galore finding foods and learning from different cultures to enhance our business.

How I Found my Unknown Mentor

About a year ago I was keen to find out who the nutritionist was that turned my life around. I wanted to know what she was doing and I wanted to thank her for inspiring me to keep going despite the adversity. I did some research online and when I came to a dead end I decided to put it to the universe to give me the answer.

Just recently the universe delivered the nutritionist to me in person. How I love synchronicity and the power of intention!

I had interviewed Brandon Bays, an American author and speaker, for my podcast Up 4 A Chat and had been given a ticket to her event in Ballina.

Brandon Bays is entertaining and full of stories. On the first day she spoke about her recovery from cancer. She had worked with Tony Robbins for 10 years, wearing many hats in Tony’s business, one of which was doing the health and nutrition talk on the Monday of his UPW events.

After she finished the session, and with her becoming more and more familiar to me, I went up to her and asked if she had spoken at the 1995 UPW event in Sydney. It turns out she was the speaker I had been searching for all this time!

I was able to briefly tell her my story and thank her for what she did for that unsure 35 year old mother of three. Gratitude is such an important part of my life and to be able to thank Brandon was a milestone.

I also have to thank the power of thought, clear intention and conscious creation. There is a power in creating what you want. In fact, anything that has been created by humans or done by humans in this world began as a thought in the mind of one person.

When I go back through my life and realise how many things began as a thought and became a reality, it is truly magical.

The moral of the story is a little bit like Sliding Doors – Who knows what I would have done if it were not for Brandon Bays inspiring me to act on my love and passion and to not to give up nor doubt my knowledge of food and nutrition?

Our dream here at Changing Habits and Functional Nutrition Academy and What’s With Wheat? is to inspire people to educate themselves so that we can create a tsunami of change that will help our children and future generations.

I want to thank all who follow us, read our articles and books, follow our programs and protocols and act on the knowledge that will create generational health in our communities.
