Everyone in Australia knows the name Costa, the energetic expert gardener from  ABC television and radio. A constant at flower and garden shows, he is an advocate for healthy soil and food growing and he is passionate about doing the right thing by the planet and the abundance it can give us.

I was fortunate enough to have a couple of hours talking with Costa while I was in Sydney recently. He had been filming in the northern beaches and was singing the praises of a lady who lived in a caravan park and had an amazing food garden and compost. He believes we should all become backyard gardeners, producing healthy produce for our families.

Soil is for plants as microbiome is for humans

Costa is absolutely passionate about the soil and the health of the soil. The microbes and nutrition in the soil are vital for plants to be healthy. The microbes help the plant gather the minerals from the soil in order to grow – without microbes our plants have very few minerals, they become sick and are more easily attacked by pests and disease.

Costa and I talked about the similarity of our professions. He is interested in soil and healthy plants and I’m interested in the food he produces being healthy for human consumption.

The similarity goes even further. While plants are rooted within the soil and cannot move but are nourished by that soil and the microbiology of the soil, we humans are fortunate in that we can move – but we must carry our own ‘soil’ (microbiology) with us because without that microbiology we cannot uptake minerals nor produce vitamins or have healthy immune systems which help ward off disease and illness.

The microbiology we carry is in our GUT. Our microbiome makes up 90% of our genetic blueprint and is instrumental for our survival.

Destroy the microbiology in the soil and the microbiome in the GUT and we have a recipe for disaster.

Under attack

At the moment both are under attack.

Herbicides like glyphosates (roundup) and the like are soil antibiotics, destroying the very thing that the plants need to be healthy and to uptake the precious minerals the plants cannot make.

Antibiotics, the pill, steroids, antacids and other medications as well as many additives and preservatives in our food are destroying the GUT microbiome, the very thing that humans require to help digest our food and uptake important minerals, vitamins and macronutrients.

Add the two together and we have poor quality plants lacking in important minerals and nutrition being feed to poor quality humans, compounding the problem as each generation progresses.

Good news is – there is a solution

The good news is – there are some simple things you can do right now to help stop this march toward ill health and disease.

Firstly, I always advise people to buy organic where they can and to avoid medications that aren’t absolutely necessary. Keeping your GUT as healthy as possible plays a critical role in your overall health and wellbeing. Once you have a healthy GUT, you will really see the difference.

Secondly, we know modern farming practices has resulted in plants growing in nutrient-depleted soils. This, combined with food that is stored for too long (lowering the nutrient content of the food), refined foods, poor diet and chemicals and pollutants in the diet – all mean that our body’s loss system has to work harder – and use more minerals –  to expel these toxins.
